The world map used in the visualisation of the approximately 1000 projects that are part of SI-DRIVE can be dragged with the left mouse button or by touch and zoomed into by scrolling or double-clicking onto the map.

Every project is mapped to one particular city – usually the city a project originated in or operates from. In cases where a project does not have one specific city but rather only a country as "home base", the geographical centre of the country in question is used to "pin" the project in place. Countries containing projects are painted a colour; greyed-out areas signify countries where there are no projects.

The dots on the world map represent the cities in which projects are located. Hovering the mouse over a dot causes its corresponding city name to appear in the small statistics box at the bottom right of the visualisation, which, at other times, shows the project count for all visualised cases.

Clicking on a city dot causes the country the city is situated in to get highlighted in a different colour. At the same time, a scrollable popup containing the names of all projects located in the city in question appears. You can move this popup out of your way by grabbing it at the top (where the country name is displayed) with your mouse, and dragging and dropping it elsewhere on the map.

A click or tap on a project name listed in the popop slides out a box on the left side of the screen which holds fact and figures about the selected project. At the same time, the city dot the project is located in begins to pulsate to make the city better visible on the map; the pulsation continues until more information on another project is requested – at which point the pulsation switches to this next project's city – or until the detail view is closed again.

The detail view for a project contains the following information (if available):

  • original project name and English translation, or just the English name in cases where a project's name is already in English
  • a description of the project
  • the year the project came into existence
  • a link to the project's (main) website
  • information on which countries the project operates in, what its policy areas are (with the policy field it focuses on most listed first and highlighted), the stage the project currently finds itself in and any project partners (including which industry sector they belong to)

While the detail view for a project is open, the country or countries it operates in are simultaneously highlighted on the world map – in a different colour than when the city dot was initially selected. In many cases, the country a project is based in and the region(s) it operates in will be identical, though some projects operate in several different countries.

Clicking on the same project name in the popup once more makes the sliding info box disappear; clicking on different projects listed in the popup will leave the detail view open and display facts about the other projects selected.

Instead of picking only a single city dot, entire countries can also be selected to reveal all projects located there. The same popout which appears when clicking on a city dot pop ups, but now it contains all projects based in the entire country, city by city, with all cities with projects listed alphabetically.

Filtering

The mapped projects can be filtered by several criteria, including policy area (as determined by the SI-DRIVE research project, see this page for more information), world region or project stage. All filtering is done by selecting or deselecting the corresponding options (buttons) in the menu at the top right of the visualisation.

The seven key policy areas at the centre of SI-DRIVE are:

  • Education
  • Employment
  • Energy Supply
  • Environment
  • Health and Social Care
  • Poverty Reduction and Sustainable Development
  • Transport and Mobility

Almost all visualised cases focus on one or more of these policy fields. To only get shown projects which list one particular of these seven policy areas as their "main" or "most important" one (irrespective of whichever other policy areas they might cover), one or more of these policy areas can be selected in the top right menu of the visualisation.

The five project stages are:

  • Impact: the project achieved significant impact
  • Testing: the project is testing the solution
  • Implementation: the project is implementing the solution
  • Invention: the project is developing a solution
  • Idea/inspiration: the project is developing the idea for a solution

The default for project stage filtering is "all", which covers all projects, regardless of project stage.

Furthermore, the visualisation can be limited to one of 13 world regions. The same defaults apply as for filtering by project stage: projects all over the world are shown when "all" is selected in the regions dropdown.

With the Reset button in the upper right corner, the visualisation can be returned to its initial state, showing all projects without any filtering in place.

About SI-DRIVE

Social Innovation – Driving Force of Social Change, in short SI-DRIVE, is a research project funded in the European Union's 7th Framework Programme. It aims at extending knowledge about social innovation (SI) in three major directions:

  1. integration of theories and research methodologies to advance understanding of SI, leading to a comprehensive new paradigm of innovation,
  2. European and global mapping of SI, addressing different social, economic, cultural, historical and religious contexts in eight major world regions,
  3. in-depth analyses and case studies in seven policy areas, with cross-European and cross-world region comparisons, foresight and policy round tables to ensure relevance for policy makers and practitioners.

The outcomes of SI-DRIVE cover a broad range of research dimensions, which impact societal change and empowerment in particular, and contribute to the objectives of the Europe 2020 Strategy.

The visualisation presented here includes around 1000 cases of social innovation in seven policy areas on all five continents. These were mapped by the project's 25 international partners as well as social innovators (practitioners) and invited institutions which fund or support social innovation.
